We had a successful Sweet Pea season this year. But it has unfortunately come to an end. We tried something new in the way we grew them, the Cordon Method of trellising them up. It was successful up to a point with very long stems and big beautiful blooms. Our designers loved them and we sold every bunch we had.
This method was time consuming in that all tendrils and nonflowering branches had to be removed. As the vines grew, they needed to be clipped over and over to the string.
They grew quickly, aggressively and soon topped out at the top of our hoophouse. Stems began to curve and then an unfortunate accident happened. The cable holding the vines up snapped and the row of peas were on the ground. We reattached the cable and the vines back but the inevitable end of our sweet peas season coming soon.
The only way to reattach the cable was to undo the vines, Two hours later the everything was back in order. We were able to extend our harvest for a few more weeks
