After The Tarps come off…..

We have shown you how to occultate a flower bed to prepare it for the next crop, whether it is the next flower crop or cover crop.  We have explained the reason we use occulation in previous posts but the main reason is that our heavy clay soil compacts to pottery clay when using mechanical tilling equipment and becomes very hard to plant our seedlings. Our seedlings do not thrive or sometimes survive when going in to our heavy soil. Using occulation over the past couple of years has begun to improve the tilth of our soil.  While this method works great on our farm, each farmer has to do what is best for their own farm and soil. We share this as only another method to achieving beautiful flowers. It works for us, it may work for you.

A quick little video of what the soil looks like after the tarps come off.
